Why Self-Scan Is Bad For Business

Everybody is in a hurry these days. Time is valuable, so anytime Americans can save time they are likely to do so. However, there is one instance where time convenience ends up costing you more, and that is the self-scan checkout.

By now, we are all aware how the self-checkout process works. You gather your merchandise, scan the items at the checkout, process your payment, bag everything up and depart the store. How convenient; you can do this all without interacting with an employee. But what if that was not entirely accurate? Each retailer that uses self-scan checkout has at least one dedicated employee who monitors and tracks the activity at the self-scan counters. If you make a mistake and forget to scan something, or an item does not scan properly, these employees determine the next steps. If you are a minority, it usually results in harassment, humiliation and ultimately police involvement. All for an innocent mistake.

No one should ever be treated differently based on the color of their skin. However, that is exactly what is taking place at Walmart stores across the country. People of color using the self-scan checkout at Walmart are unfairly and unjustly accused and prosecuted for shoplifting all while white Americans in similar situations are given a chance to explain the mistake and continue on their way.

If you or someone you know have been subjected to this type of treatment while using the self-checkout at a Walmart store, you may qualify for a new class action lawsuit.
