Police suspect alcohol led to devastating car accident

In Ohio or anywhere else in the country, drinking and driving is unnecessarily dangerous. It’s also illegal. Most people understand the dangers and take steps to avoid getting behind the wheel after drinking. Unfortunately, some still do it and risk causing a car accident that could leave other people seriously or fatally injured.

Troopers with the Ohio State Highway Patrol believe alcohol heavily factored into a recent crash that took place on Interstate 70 at around 2:30 a.m. on a Tuesday morning. The OSP report noted that a speeding vehicle driven by a 37-year-old man struck another vehicle and caused it to spin off the roadway, slam into a light pole and roll over before coming to a rest. The man’s vehicle continued further down the interstate before stopping.

The 20-year-old driver of the second vehicle was transported from the scene via helicopter only to pass away at the hospital. The 21-year-old passenger in the front seat suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken by helicopter to another hospital after initially being transported by ambulance to an area hospital. The 22-year-old backseat passenger only went to the hospital as a precautionary measure. Neither occupant of the first vehicle suffered injuries, according to reports.

Troopers arrested the first vehicle driver on suspicion of drunk driving, and he will likely face formal criminal charges in connection with the car accident. As the days and weeks pass, the family of the deceased victim and the surviving passenger may exercise their rights to file civil claims against the other driver. The evidence presented in any criminal proceedings along with a conviction if secured by prosecutors could provide valuable support in their claims to help prove his negligent actions led to the serious or fatal injuries suffered.
