Recent car accident raises Ohio’s 2018 road fatalities to 13

Far too many people die on Ohio’s roadways. Each year, someone has the unenviable task of keeping track of those fatalities. Every time a car accident occurs that results in a death, that person gets added to the tally for the year. As of March 1, one crash increased the growing total for 2018 to 13.

Two people lost their lives in the crash, which took place on Interstate 270 in the eastbound lanes. The driver, a 62-year-old woman, and the 63-year-old woman riding in the front passenger seat succumbed to the injuries they suffered in the impact there at the scene. They were not the only ones in the vehicle, however.

An 18-month-old and a 38-year-old woman occupied the back seat of the vehicle. Both survived the crash, but suffered serious injuries. The woman was last reported as being in critical condition. No further information was provided on the condition of the baby except to say that her condition was stable.

As for how the accident happened, Columbus police continue to investigate. Preliminary reports indicate that the vehicle swerved between the exit for State Route 23 and the interstate. It then slammed into an attenuator in the center.

In a car accident such as this one, it may be possible to pursue an award of damages through the filing of a wrongful death or personal injury claim from the estate of the deceased driver. An investigation into the circumstances leading up to the crash may provide the evidence needed in order to prove to an Ohio court that negligence caused the death or injuries suffered. Even though it may provide useful information to that end, it is not necessary to wait until the formal investigation concludes to begin the litigation process.
