Ohio residents have likely noticed that pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson is in the news a lot lately. From carcinogenic talcum powder to a drug that causes uncontrollable internal bleeding, the product liability lawsuits just seem to keep coming. In another state, the most recent case to make it to court involved, not baby power, but pelvic mesh, and it is expected to be only the first of thousands of claims.

The lawsuit was filed by a woman and her husband, who are suing both Johnson & Johnson and its subsidiary, Ethicon. These companies developed and manufactured the two pelvic mesh devices that the woman had implanted approximately nine years ago, in an attempt to control her incontinence. However, when she immediately began to experience complications like discomfort and pain, the plaintiffs say it became necessary for her to undergo three surgeries to attempt to remove the devices.

She now complains of suffering from chronic pain as a result. The complaint alleges that the woman was never properly warned of the potential dangers of the mesh, which is inclined to erode. For these accusations and more, the plaintiffs are seeking damages, both punitive and compensatory, that are estimated to exceed several million dollars.

This case is only one among many thousands of complaints from woman in various states all over the nation who claim to have suffered similarly. Unfortunately, many fewer complaints actually ever make it to jury trial, though those that do often result in multi-million dollar awards for damages when litigated successfully. In such cases, the knowledgeable legal counsel of an attorney is almost certainly a victim’s best bet for a positive legal outcome, so any Ohio residents who have suffered from this or other fault medical devices may wish to seek the counsel of an experienced product liability lawyer.
