Old school buildings may contain asbestos

Asbestos is a deadly material that was used in building construction before the dangers were realized. Many older schools may still have asbestos in ceiling tiles, flooring and insulation.

This material doesn’t cause problems if it’s not being disturbed. When something that contains asbestos is touched or moved, asbestos can be released into the air. These fibers are much smaller than a human hair. If the asbestos fibers are breathed in, they can cause lung problems that can lead to death.

When is asbestos in old schools dangerous?

Older schools must have inspections for asbestos. If it’s known that there’s asbestos, there must be a management plan in place. One part of this is that only professional asbestos removal companies can handle this material.

School renovations and repairs are two situations that can lead to problems. Special steps must be taken to prevent asbestos from being released if work has to be done on areas of the school that might have the fibers.

How can teachers and staff stay safe?

Damaged areas anywhere in the school that may contain asbestos should be left alone and reported to the administration. These areas may need to be secured so students don’t bother them. In some cases, the school may need to close while work is done to these areas.

Educators and staff members at older schools may be exposed to asbestos and not even realize it. If they start to suffer from health problems that are caused by asbestos, they need to get medical care. They may decide that legal action is necessary to help them cover the expenses they have because of the asbestos exposure.
