There was no reason a local police officer should have had cancer. Michael Konn was only 37 years old, had never smoked and was healthy, with no family history of cancer. His bladder cancer diagnosis took everyone by surprise.

Then, he heard about the Zantac recall. Zantac is a common medication that has been used for decades to treat heartburn. Last year, the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) reported that Zantac and ranitidine (the generic form of the drug) contain a cancer-causing substance. As a result, drug manufacturers and pharmaceutical companies began mass recalls of the drug.

Unfortunately, for many people, the drug recall came too late. Thousands of people have been diagnosed with various forms of cancer already. Many of those cancers may have been caused by taking over-the-counter (OTC) or prescription-strength Zantac.

Former police officer is getting help from the Kelley Ferraro law firm

Cleveland Officer Konn had to leave the police force due to his severe illness. However, he is suing the drug companies for causing his cancer with the help of the law firm of Kelley Ferraro.

Attorney John Murphy was recently on Channel 19 News in Cleveland. With hundreds of additional lawsuits expected by the end of March, Murphy believes this will be “the largest mass tort of our time.” Past mass tort claims include the water contaminant that was the basis for the Erin Brockovich movie.

Millions of people will be affected by Zantac contamination

It is expected that thousands, if not millions, of people may be diagnosed with fatal illnesses from taking Zantac. Every one of those victims has friends and family members whose lives will be forever changed because of the cancer diagnoses.

While lawsuits cannot cure those who have been harmed, holding the drug companies responsible may stop them from making deadly mistakes in the future. Also, compensation awarded can help provide financial security to those left behind.
